After years of talks and delays, crews will break ground today on the $153 million expansion of Gary/Chicago International Airport. The project includes a major runway expansion. Northwest Indiana Regional Development Authority Executive Director Bill Hanna says the work better positions the facility as Chicago’s third major airport.

The expansion will also include railroad bridges, new railroad routes and railroad demolition lines. Hanna says the project solidifies a partnership between the Gary Chicago International Airport Authority Board and the RDA. He says the two groups hired an airport consulting firm to research what niche the airport could fill for the market. That firm determined that charter services and general aviation are the area’s biggest needs.
