A $100 million deal with a Finnish company is expected to eventually have a positive impact on Brevini Wind's turbine manufacturing operations in Delaware County, which are still under construction. Brevini has signed an agreement to provide main gear units for WinWinD's wind power plants. The deal will start to impact Brevini's Indiana plant in late 2011.

WinWinD, a Finnish manufacturer of wind power plants, has signed an agreement with Brevini, one of the world's leading gear box manufacturers, concerning main gear units to be supplied for WinWinD's three-megawatt wind power plants.

Main drive units are one of the most important, complex and expensive components in wind turbines. These complex gear units transform each slow revolution per minute of the wind turbine blades into hundreds of revolutions per minute to drive the generator which produce the electrical power for consumption.

WinWinD has signed a development and supply agreement with Brevini. Brevini is one of the most important manufactures of pitch and yaw drive technology in the global wind turbine business. Brevini Wind Deutschland GmbH, a member of Brevini Wind which is part of Brevini Group, will develop close co-operation with WinWinD to provide a next generation planetary gear unit for main drive deployment.

"Our goal in this new solution is to reduce the wind turbine nacelle weight, since weight is very expensive at heights of one hundred meters or more which are required for larger turbines. The total weight of the nacelle has a direct effect on the loads supported by wind turbine structures, including the tower. This next generation gear unit will also be much easier to maintain," says WinWinD's CEO, Ilkka Hakala.

“We are very excited to start this project with WinWinD; we believe that we are building something innovative, not just for us but for the whole industry, one that will revive wind turbine manufacturing and lead both of us to a large market share globally”, says Jacopo Tozzi, President of Brevini Wind.
