DES MOINES – Governor Chet Culver announced today that Des Moines has been named “America’s best city to do business,” according to MarketWatch’s annual survey of cities.

“Even as Iowans continue to deal with the effects of the national recession, this is further proof that Iowa’s economy will rebound, and that with the strong fiscal policies enacted under my administration, Iowa can compete with any other state in terms of private sector job retention and creation, and economic growth,” said Governor Culver. “We are proving that we are ahead of the curve, ready for recovery, and I commend the City of Des Moines for this honor.”

Des Moines beat competing cities such as Washington D.C., Omaha, and previous multiple-year winner Minneapolis/St. Paul. The survey compared the economic strength and business climate of more than 100 cities across the nation.

MarketWatch cited Des Moines’ diverse economy, relatively low unemployment, concentration of major businesses, and economic stability, among other factors.
