Pennsylvania’s prime location, advanced manufacturing capabilities, vast transportation network, and reliable workforce make our state a critical component of our country’s national defense infrastructure. Our state is home to a variety of key military and defense facilities such as the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Defense Distribution Center, U.S. Army War College, Tobyhanna Army Depot, and an array of military depots.
We have over 6,300 Pennsylvania-based government contractors, with the majority providing services to defense-related industries. In 2007, Pennsylvania was 5th in government contracts awarded to contractors in Pennsylvania with a total of US$16.5 billion, and 8th in contracts performed in Pennsylvania with US$13.5 billion.
The Northeast Corridor
Part of what makes Pennsylvania so attractive to the Defense and Aerospace industry is our premier location. Our proximity to Washington D.C and many of the nation’s defense-based headquarters, plus our concentrated defense industry infrastructure ensures that Pennsylvania stays strongly integrated into the national defense base.
Pennsylvania’s location on the East Coast also provides excellent access to major population centers, allowing defense industry players to provide rapid support to the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Midwestern regions. Our first class north-south and east-west corridors, strategic ports, sophisticated large-scale passenger and cargo airports that move more than 715,000 tons/648,637 metric tons of material annually, and extensive railway lines with more than 5,145 miles/8,280 km of track make us one of the most well-connected states in the nation.
New Talent, New Technology, New Ideas
Education is a top priority in Pennsylvania. Eighty-six percent of Pennsylvania adults have earned at least a high school degree and one out of every four has obtained a bachelor’s or graduate degree. According to the National Science Foundation, we’re ranked 5th in the United States for the number of doctoral scientists and 7th for the number of doctoral engineers.
Forbes ranked seven of our schools among the most “connected campuses” in the nation. We have two prestigious universities in the top 10: the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Pittsburgh. Morgan Quinto Press ranks us among the nation’s “smartest states.”
