South Carolina - Automotive Automotive - Home

South Carolina has a strong and thriving automotive industry. Michelin began investing in South Carolina in 1973 when it chose the state for the company’s first United States production location.  Since that initial investment, Michelin has established its North American headquarters in the state and has opened R&D operations, a test track and multiple manufacturing plants.

BMW also scored a first when it began manufacturing automobiles in South Carolina – its first full manufacturing facility outside of Germany and its only plant in North America. BMW has continued to invest and expand in South Carolina.

Other OEMs include Daimler, Honda, American LaFrance, Road Rescue and Force Protection. Daimler assembles Sprinter vans; and its Daimler Trucks North America subsidiary, Freightliner, builds chassis and is moving its sales and marketing division to the state.  Honda makes all-terrain vehicles and personal watercraft plus assembles engines.  American LaFrance manufactures a full line of emergency vehicles and apparatus and is also headquartered in the state.  Road Rescue manufactures premium, customized ambulances. Force Protection is a leading developer and manufacturer of ballistic- and blast-protected vehicles that are used around the world.

More than 200 suppliers, including Bosch, Draexlmaier, Hella, Magna, Plastic Omnium and ZF, support these manufacturers.
