Passionate researchers dedicated to pushing the definition of science to new levels and world-class biomedical and life sciences facilities have brought Alabama national acclaim. Add to that the key investments and a strong commitment the state has made to research and biotechnology projects, and you have the perfect chemistry for your company’s future growth.

Key highlights of Alabama’s biotechnology industry include:

More than 90 biotechnology-related companies are either doing business or have headquarters in Alabama.

The new Hudson-Alpha Institute for Biotechnology located in Huntsville is expected to bring 900 new scientists to the area and create a biotechnology hub that could transform Huntsville much like the way a team of rocket scientists did a half century ago. The institute's genomic research will complement the University of Alabama at Birmingham's clinical research base.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham is doing more than $450 million in externally funded research annually – mostly in the biosciences.

Auburn University, the University of Alabama, University of South Alabama, and the University of Alabama at Huntsville all have strong niche bioscience research programs.

Southern Research Institute is a leading private contract research organization with more than 600 scientists, technicians and support staff whose focus is on cancer, infectious and neuro/CNS diseases. Southern Research discovered six FDA-approved drugs, with four more in clinical trials, and offers joint discovery programs through out-licensing of clinical candidates. Services include medicinal and combinatorial chemistry, libraries and high throughput screening; molecular, structural and cellular biology; lead optimization with animal models, ADME/PK, and toxicology.

Birmingham, Huntsville, Auburn, and Mobile all have outstanding research and industrial parks with incubator programs available for relocation or fostering the growth of new enterprises.

Alabama has produced six FDA approved cancer drugs, and is on the forefront with major initiatives for flu, vaccines, the NIH Roadmap, cancer and more.
