Taking the Initiative in the State of Innovation
Pennsylvania’s dedication to the life sciences and biotech industry is illustrated by our business-friendly environment and diverse array of initiatives designed to promote the expansion of these sectors.
Since 2001, the Life Sciences Greenhouse Initiative, created to ensure the continued enhancement of the life sciences industry in Pennsylvania, has invested more than $36.5 million in more than 170 projects. The Ben Franklin Technology Partners have leveraged $675 million over more than two decades to facilitate entrepreneurship and technological innovation to drive the state’s economic growth.
In 2007, Pennsylvania set aside $150 million to support life science research in the Commonwealth Universal Research Enhancement (CURE) program, created three regionally based Greenhouses to promote the commercialization of bioscience research, and earmarked over $32 million during the past two years to fund high-technology facilities. This is in addition to more than $500 million in venture capital investment that went to biotechnology, medical device and equipment companies last year.
