All types of packaging, including paper and allied products, miscellaneous plastic products, glass and glassware, metal cans and even shipping containers and packaging machinery are in high demand. Illinois is the leading state in the U.S. for manufacturing of packaging machinery. The United States is the world's largest market for packaging technology, earning revenues exceeding $100 billion annually. Although this is a huge market, it is still growing, fuelled by the highly competitive, industrialized, market-driven U.S. economy. The extensive range of American-made packaging equipment reflects the machinery industry's historical response to the dynamic needs of U.S. and international manufacturers of packaged goods. As of 2005 Illinois ranked number one in the U.S. in terms of total sales in the packaing industry. Chicago will host the 2008PackExpo International trade show, at which over 45,000 visitors from more than 120 countries are expected.
