Illinois is in many ways the de facto economic center of the printing industry, with a history in the industry dating back to the early 1900s. Illinois is home to over 5,300 printers and related businesses, including industry giant RR Donnelly & Sons. In 2005 the value of Illinois-based printing industry sales was over $20 billion and the industry employed more than 93,000 people. Alongside the world’s largest companies numerous small and medium firms have emerged. Embossing shops, direct mailers, and repair operations also benefit from Illinois’ strong printing industry.
Chicago’s central location makes it a logical center for distribution and host for industry events. It regularly hosts the annual GraphExpo trade show and conference, which in 2007 was the largest printing expo in the western hemisphere.
