Forestry is a vital link to Alabama’s thriving economy. More than 170,000 Alabamians are employed directly or indirectly by the forestry industry, representing about 10 percent of Alabama’s total work force.
The forest industry is the state’s largest manufacturing industry, producing an estimated $15.39 billion worth of products in 2005. There are approximately 850 active forest products manufacturing operations in the state.
Alabama has the second largest timerland base in the United States with nearly 23 million acres. The forest products industry is the state's largest manufacturing industry.

- Forest products exports were valued at $2.27 billion in 2008, ranking the industry as the third largest exporter in the state.
- During the 10-year period ending in 2005, the industry invested $5.9 billion in capital for new plants, expansions and modernizations.
Lumber and Wood Products: In 2005, the lumber and wood products industries produced an estimated $5.2 billion worth of products.
Pulp and Paper Products: Pulp and paper products industries produced an estimated $7.9 billion worth of products in 2005.
Furniture and Fixtures: In 2005, furniture and other secondary wood industries produced an estimated $2.5 billion worth of products.
Industry-University Collaboration: The Forest Products Development Center at Auburn University's School of Forestry provides a technical information and analytical support base to facilitate and encourage forestbased economic development in Alabama. The Center serves as a contact point for industry personnel wishing to explore new investment or market opportunities within Alabama.
